Please share anything you'd like from your own personal breastfeeding experience.

I breastfed both of my children. My first breastfed for 15 months and we had a very easy breastfeeding journey. My second breastfed for almost 3 years but with many challenges such as oral ties, reduced milk supply related to poor transfer, increased stress from working outside of the home, and ultimately losing my father that same year. We fought really hard to keep our breastfeeding relationship going, and I am so proud of everything we accomplished.

Ultimately, these experiences led me on my path to becoming an IBCLC.  I knew that other parents in my community needed support to meet their breastfeeding goals and I wanted to help them along their journey. Knowing you are not alone during those challenging times and having well-educated support is key to being successful.

What excites you most about being an IBCLC?

Giving parents the confidence and knowledge to be successful with their breastfeeding goals while providing supportive family-centered care.

In what types of settings have you supported patients in lactation?

Hospital-Labor & Delivery, Mother/Baby Care, and Newborn Nursery

What makes up your family (people & pets)?

My amazingly supportive husband and our two children.

What do you enjoy doing while not at work?

We love to sail on our sailboat any chance we can.

Please share any additional education or certifications you have.

Bachelor of Science-Nursing, Registered Nurse, Certified Childbirth Educator, and Child Passenger Safety Technician

When did you know you wanted to become an IBCLC?

I have always enjoyed helping patients when working as a Labor and Delivery nurse, but after my two children were born, I knew I had a passion for lactation work.

Why did you become an IBCLC?

I want to support parents in their breastfeeding journey so that they can meet their goals, whatever that path looks like. It's important to me that I practice with empathy and always create a safe, supportive environment for them.

What do you wish you could tell every parent (that they would actually do) and why?

Take a deep breath. Know what you have done and continue to do is wonderful. You are doing an amazing job, and it's ok not to have all of the answers. We are here to help and guide you, but please give yourself lots of grace.
