Cluster Feeding In The Breastfed Baby

What is Cluster Feeding?

Cluster feeding is when baby desires several short feeds, that occur close together. It is typically considered normal newborn feeding behavior however, in some instances, it can call for evaluation. The following questions are important to understand when evaluating a baby who is more feeding often than every few hours.

Does baby have a deep and effective latch?
Is the breastfeeding session painful for mom?
Is baby content or frustrated during feeds?
When and how often is baby cluster feeding?
And as always, what is baby’s urine and stool output?

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) are a great resource to ensure your baby’s feeding patterns are normal, or if they need attention.
